Hemp in history
In the UK alone hemp has a long history dating back to at least 800AD. In the 16th century under the rule of Henry VII farmers were positively encouraged to grow hemp crops to provide materials for the British naval fleet. During the war with Napoleon 1812 he decided it would be best to attack Russia to stop its supply of 16.5 thousand tonnes of hemp a year to the again provide essential materials for the British naval fleet. He was however unsuccessful in his goals.
William Shakespeare one of the most proclaimed writers and playwrights clay pipes were found to contain traces of high thc hemp and he did write about a “NOTED WEED”
Queen Elizabeth 1 may not have used hemp herself, but she made sure England had plenty of it and in 1563 ordered every land owner with over 60 acres to grow it or face a fine of £5.
